Canada Post opts for LogiTermWeb

The linguistic department of Canada Post recently gave Terminotix the task to replace a competitive solution with LogiTermWeb. Terminotix first proceeded with the deployment of LogiTermWeb and AlignFactory, followed by the training of the translators, revisors and coordinators. Terminotix then converted and imported all the archived translation memories and terminology records to LogiTermWeb. Finally, Terminotix created a customized terminology template in order to satisfy Canada Post's specific terminology needs. Launch queries in Termium and TransSearch from MS-Word!

Satisfying the concrete needs of translators has always been Terminotix’s commitment, and its last creation is an excellent example. Terminotix has developed a toolbar embedded in MS-Word that enables you to launch queries in Termium [ http://www.termiumplus.gc.ca ] and TransSearch [ http://tsrali.com ]. To launch a query, you only need to select a term in MS-Word and click on the button corresponding to the search engine you want to search in. As soon as you press the button, the screen automatically switches to the selected search engine and the results are displayed. To search in TransSearch, you need to have a valid account and be logged in before launching an automatic search. For TransSearch, you can select “Documents Collection” and your username directly into the toolbar, and for Termium, you can set up the search keys (“English Terms”, “French Terms”, “Spanish Terms” and “All Terms”).

Termium [ http://www.termiumplus.gc.ca/ ] contains more than 3,900,000 terms and names, with definitions, contexts, examples of usage, observations and phraseological units.

TransSearch [ http://tsrali.com ] is a bilingual concordancer containing:

  • The Hansard of the House of Commons from 1986 to today;
  • The Hansard of the Senate from April 1986;
  • The rulings of the following courts:
    • Supreme Court of Canada up to February 28, 2009;
    • Federal Court of Canada up to February 12, 2009;
    • Tax Court of Canada up to January 29, 2009;
    • Federal Court of Appeal up to February 3, 2009.
  • A Spanish-English document collection containing international labour standard conventions, recommendations and decisions kindly made available by the International Labour Organization.

To get your free Terminotix toolbar, please write to sales@terminotix.com and provide us with your coordinates, the version of your MS-Word, your preferred language, and don’t forget to write “Toolbar” in the subject field of your email.

The On-line Concordancer

A concordancer is a search program specifically designed to find expressions in a corpus along with their translations. Expressions found are displayed in context. A bilingual concordancer offers a wide range of solutions to common translation problems. The bilingual versions of the documents show how seasoned translators have previously dealt with references to topical events, idiomatic expressions and other aspects of language and culture. Here are a few on-line concordancers:

  • TransSearch [ http://tsrali.com ], offered by Terminotix, contains the Hansard and transcripts from the main Canadian courts;
  • WeBitext [ http://www.webitext.com ], offered by the National Research Council of Canada, is a bilingual corpus searchable by domain;
  • Linguee [ http://www.linguee.com ], offered by German company Linguee, contains corpora from multiple sources in many languages;
  • TOTALRecall [ http://candle.cs.nthu.edu.tw/totalrecall/totalrecall/totalrecall.aspx ], offered by the National Tsing Hua University, is an English-to-Chinese corpus;
  • EUR-Lex [ http://eur-lex.europa.eu ], from the European Union, offers documents in 23 languages.

You too now have the opportunity to convert your bilingual archives into an on-line concordancer with LogiTermWeb. To learn how, please write us at sales@terminotix.com. If you know other on-line concordancers that you would like to share in our next Newsletters, please let us know at sales@terminotix.com.
